The Scottish Borders Jedburgh Things to do Directions

Jedburgh

Jedburgh is roughly half way between Edinburgh and Newcastle, and is the first town in Scotland after crossing the Carter Bar and the border with England. As such it was of vital strategic importance during the various wars between England and Scotland.
The Tourist Information Centre at Murray's Green has a leaflet detailing a Town Trail which highlights many of the features of historical interest. On summer evenings, you also have the option of joining a guided walk around the town with local historians. Jedburgh abbey which was built in the time of David I; the Castle Jail, one of Britain's most haunted buildings and Mary Queen of Scots' House offer a glimpse into life in the town over the centuries.
If you fancy something a little more energetic, there are a variety of short walks to viewpoints around the town, as well as a new network of on- and off-road cycle tracks and bridleways. Jedburgh also has a leisure centre which is mainly volunteer-run with a swimming pool, steam room and gym. During school holidays there are special children's play times in the pool, so do check before you go down.

Major events:

Highlights of the local events calendar in Jedburgh include the Hand Ba' competition in February, the Border Counties Rally in March, the Rugby Sevens in April, the Jethart Festival in July, and the Starrett Jedburgh Half-Marathon in October.
