The Scottish Borders

As the home of the feared Border Reivers, the tranquility of the Scottish Borders belies its turbulent past. Despite being within easy reach of both the central belt of Scotland and the North of England, the Borders remains very much an uncrowded haven of silence, clean air, and open spaces.
This is Braveheart country. Sir William Wallace, who led the Scottish forces during the first war of Scottish Independence in the late 13th century, is commemorated by a statue overlooking the river Tweed.
Sir Walter Scott, the famous poet and inventor of the historic novel, lived from 1771 to 1832. Abbotsford, the house he built near Melrose, is open to the public, and the view of the Eildon Hills from Scott's View is well worth a stop on the way there. Local legend has it that his horses were so accustomed to stopping at that point, that they paused while pulling the carriage taking his body for burial.
